For this week’s follow we’re delighted to highlight start-up Aflo Analytics driven by Susan Kelly.

aflo™ uses AI, sensors and hyper-personalised data to control life-threatening symptoms for people with asthma, COPD and cystic fibrosis.

The goal of aflo™ is to improve the management of respiratory conditions for patients and clinicians, saving lives, reducing costs and improving outcomes.

We caught up with Susan to tease out a little more about her….

Q1. How would you describe yourself in 6 words or less?

Learning new stuff every day.

Q2 What prompted you to start your business?

I've been an academic, a researcher, worked in global corporates and really enjoyed problem solving, big challenges, work variety and learning new stuff. I was always thinking about ideas for businesses but felt too busy getting on with work and family life to take that first step. Working in health - and in my own family experience - I saw the frightening impact of asthma and COPD symptoms and wanted to help solve that problem. I worked with some of the biggest patient organisations in the UK and started to really dig into it about three years ago as the rise in acceptability of digital health support and developments in sensor tech, AI and big data really catalysed the opportunity to empower patients with their own data. We started our business 4 months before the pandemic and Covid19 has strengthened our resolve to bring our remote support solution to patients as fast as possible.

Q3 Can you tell us a bit more about you?

Living near the sea I'm never too far away from a chance to clear my head in a beautiful place. I love early mornings, the sun and being part of a big, noisy family. Can't wait to roam the Donegal beaches and mountains with friends and family again.

Q4 How has being part of the AwakenHub community helped your business?

Being part of such a great network of strong, focused women has provided me with role models, mentors and new friends. It's connected me with women who have shared the highs and lows of their start up experience and raised my profile, giving me opportunities to speak at high calibre events and become recognised as a female medtech founder. And it's been a lot of fun.
